Welcome to Berghostels – Kunst- und Naturfreundehaus Brünig
A beautiful, simple mountain house built on an impressive rock. Part of the movement of the Naturefriends.
About us
Our Naturfreundehaus was founded in 1949, and it contains a large parlour, two guest floors with 16 rooms and 52 beds.
We are a family of experienced hostel managers and artists, three of whom live here permanently, and many others who stay with us for various periods of time.
Attached to the Berghostel is a recording studio, a wood workshop, a permaculture garden in the making, a photo and film studio and a pottery.

Did you know …
The Naturefriends accommodations in Switzerland originated from the broader Naturefriends movement, which began in the late 19th century.
Exactly it started in 1895 in Vienna, Austria, with the goal of promoting nature appreciation, outdoor activities, and social engagement. It aimed to make nature accessible to everyone, especially the working class.
The movement quickly spread to Switzerland, where local groups began forming. In the early 1900s, Swiss Naturfreunde clubs were established, leading to the creation of accommodations that offered affordable lodging for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
These accommodations, often located in scenic areas, served as bases for exploring the Swiss Alps and other natural landscapes. They typically provided basic amenities, emphasizing community and connection to nature.
The accommodations were designed to be financially accessible to everyone, allowing the working class to be able to enjoy holidays in the country and fostering a sense of community and encouraging outdoor activities.
The naturefriends accommodations (there are more than 70 in Switzerland alone) were designed to be financially accessible to everyone, allowing the working class to be able to enjoy holidays in the country and fostering a sense of community and encouraging outdoor activities.
Today, the naturefriends accommodations continue to operate throughout Switzerland, maintaining their commitment to environmental sustainability and social inclusivity. They offer a range of lodging options, from simple mountain huts to more developed facilities.
We follow the ideals of the naturefriends very closely. People can stay with us even without paying (there are other possibilities of an exchange of goods and services we agree upon in advance) and we try to be as sustainable as possible. We don’t cook with animal products, we have a local farmer who produces our vegetables and are starting our own garden, we ourselves live simple but very free and in self-reliance.
We promote life in its most basic form and take our freedom from responsibility.
